First look indicates new flagship may be best luxury sedan. introductionthe audi a8 has been completely redesigned and re-engineered for 2004. Fast, smooth, and sophisticated, the 2004 a8 l may be the new leader among the high-end luxury sedans. It feels smoother and more refined than the mercedes s-class and it's easier to operate and better looking than the bmw 7 series. audi's a8 l boasts a powerful 4. 2-liter v8 engine, revised to produce more power for 2004. It comes with a new six-speed tiptronic automatic that replaces the previous five-speed transmission. Together, they deliver instantaneous responses to the driver wishes. Quattro all-wheel drive and a new adaptable air suspension offer a seemingly ideal balance between handling and ride quality. It's all wrapped in a new aluminum space frame, a lightweight, highly rigid structure that bonds the car into one cohesive unit, giving drivers a supreme sense of control with gibraltar-like stability. The a8's redesigned cabin is elegant, comfortable, and easy to operate. It makes its occupants feel rich and sophisticated, but not bogged down with gadgetry that requires intense study of the owner's manual. this is audi's largest sedan and it's a big car. Its wheelbase has been stretched even longer than last year's a8 l, providing even more room and greater comfort for rear passengers. As the company's flagship, the a8 l is designed to be the ultimate sedan. It competes with the mercedes-benz s-class and bmw 7 series, both of which are superb though not perfect luxury sedans. Similar to that of the bmw 7 series and jaguar xj, the a8's parking brake is electromechanical, a switch in other words. the 2004 a8 l is powered by a 330-horsepower 4. 2-liter twin-cam, five-valve v8. A solar-cell sunroof produces enough electrical energy to supply the passenger compartment continuously with fresh air via the blower even with the ignition off. walkaroundthe a8 features a distinct wedge-shaped body with a short front overhang, a low hood-line and a high, powerful tail. The shoulder line rises to the rear, giving it a croched silhouette. Its well-proportioned lines radiate elegance and agility. Audi calls it an expressive design with coupe-like lines. The front features audi's double grille with flush-fitted headlamps. Projector-beam fog lights lie below the well-integrated front bumper. nearly 17 feet in length, the a8 l is longer than the mercedes s-class, bmw 745li and 760li. The wheelbase of the new a8 l stretches to 121. 1 inches. That's 3 inches longer than the wheelbase of the previous-generation a8 l, essentially identical to that of the mercedes s-class, nearly as long as the bmw 745li and 760li, and substantially longer than that of the cadillac deville. (the wheelbase is the distance between the front wheels and the rear wheels. A longer wheelbase tends to offer more passenger room and increased stability.) the audi is slightly wider than the mercedes and comparable to the bmw. The a8 l's rear doors are long, allowing for convenient passenger entry and exit. front and rear doors open extra wide. Optional 18- and 19- inch wheels and tires are available that visually fill the wheel wells and provide a surprisingly smooth ride in spite of their short sidewalls. The taillights fit flush with the clean rear design. Those added features include the sophisticated air suspension, the elaborate bose sound system. The new space-frame design uses fewer parts, fewer joints for increased rigidity. That increased rigidity eliminates flex, giving the a8 l the feeling of being carved from a single block of bar-stock aluminum. The body is also made of aluminum. interiorthe a8 l comes loaded with features and its interior is comfortable and luxurious. The interior is a clean, classic design. A choice of leather and wood trim combinations ensures a touch of individuality. Handsome valcona leather seat upholstery comes standard with attractive alcantara (suede-like) door inserts. Aluminum trim gives the cabin a sporty flair. the seats are supportive and comfortable and adjust 16 ways. Front and rear seats are heated as is the leather-covered steering wheel. The center console provides generous storage. The electroluminescent instrument panel adjusts brightness automatically according to ambient light. a seven-inch color screen displays audi's multi-media interface, or mmi. The system is designed to minimize distraction while consolidating most of the interior functions giving the driver lots of options without filling the dash with buttons. The hvac (heating and air conditioning) system is instead a separate system that uses traditional climate controls mounted high on the center stack. For its part, the mmi screen on the center dash matches the look of the controls. Audi officials say customers discover little touches months after buying the cars. A secondary heater in the a8 l designed to heat up the rear quickly. Ambient lighting in the interior allows control of mood in the cabin. Mood lighting is good. the cabin is insulated well and carrying on a conversation is easy. It works terrifically well, essentially a microphone that samples the sound and sends out sound waves to cancel out undesirable noise. The cabin seems very well insulated for sound. The 12-speaker stereo sounds fantastic, with crisp bass and clear highs. An equalizer matched to the car's equipment and trim specification takes into account changes to interior acoustics caused by the choice of upholstery. The six-disc cd changer is in the glove box. Audi has wired the a8 l to accept either xm or serius satellite radio. The onstar telematics system comes standard, providing operators around the clock who can give directions and provide myriad other types of information. Lots of controls are available to the rear passengers including power lumbar support, and there's a fold-down center armrest. Additional heating elements ensure rear passengers get warm air just as quickly as front passengers. the a8 l comes with 10 air bags, including front knee bags. In a crash, the a8 l's computers quickly determine which dual-threshold, dual-stage air bags to deploy, how quickly to deploy them, and how intensely they should be deployed. driving impressionthe first impression of the audi a8 l is its smoothness. There's nothing remotely resembling a squeak or rattle, and there is no vibration. the responsiveness of the engine and transmission make the a8 l a joy to drive. Come september of each year, fathers and sons, and some mothers and daughters, would make the annual pilgrimage to their local dealers to ogle next year's cars. Now government rules dictate that a car's official model year is the calendar year in which it's first built. Thus, the 2005 audi a4 cannot be a 2006 because audi started building it in 2004. But there will be no change to the car when, come summer of 2005, it magically transforms into the 2006 a4. Well, no change other than price, that is; although insiders won't say, that likely will go up a bit. So, for true car nuts, now's a chance to buy next year's car before it's next year's car and at this year's price. but make no mistake. The audi a4 is all-new. And it's a car nut's car. It's fun to drive, with all the sporty bits and pieces. It has state of the art powertrains, with intercooled turbochargers, multi-stage intake manifolds, variable valve timing and the latest technological advance: direct injection, the cleanest and most efficient means yet devised of blending fuel and air in an engine's cylinders. Audi's progress hasn't stopped with the engines. A six-speed automatic transmission with tiptronic returns as an option, but the a4's standard transmission is a new six-speed manual. And a new option is a continuously variable transmission, where a steel belt and a pair of infinitely adjustable pulleys replace gears and hydraulic pumps to deliver a truly seamless shifting experience. Besides the electronic stability program, there are antilock brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution. Airbags abound, with the only extra-cost set a pair protecting rear seat occupants against side impacts. fresh styling distinguishes the new a4 from the previous-generation model. The 3. 2-liter v6 is fitted exclusively with the six-speed automatic in both body styles. The sedan with the 2. 0-liter engine comes with either front-wheel drive, which audi calls fronttrak, or quattro all-wheel drive. All v6-powered models come with quattro. the a4 comes with a luxurious list of standard equipment: dual-zone air conditioning; cruise control; tilt and telescoping steering wheel; power 12-way driver's seat, power auto-heated outside mirrors, power central locking; driver-selected, auto-on running lights; multi-speaker stereo with six-disc cd changer, wired for satellite radio; and carpeted floor mats. Standard upholstery in the 2. 0-liter a4 is cloth, in the 3. 2-liter a4, leather. option packages add myriad features, including a bose premium system with sirius or xm satellite radio. The cabriolet is set to appear in late summer or early fall of 2006 as a 2007 model and will be offered with the same engines as the sedan and avant, although transmission choices may be limited to the cvt and six-speed tiptronic. walkaroundopinions vary on the new audi signature grille, what designers call a car's 'face.' on one point, there's agreement: it's different. Whether this is a plus is subjective, but expect the look to appear in clearly recognizable and evolving form on all audis as each model comes up for refreshing. In part, this is because the new front end moves audi closer to complying with europe's impending safety standards mandating survivability levels for auto-pedestrian encounters, although company officials say this was not a primary factor in the design. the debate over the look aside, the a4 does present a more muscular and more visually planted frontal view than the previous model, this somehow despite the new a4's track being fractionally narrower than the '04's. Headlamp lenses angle upward as they wrap around the fenders, giving the fascia a more assertive look. Laterally split intakes below the body-colored bumper and outboard of the grille do dual duty, housing fog lamps and channeling air toward the front disc brakes. A modest hood bulge, a styling cue designers call a 'power bulge' by way of hinting at the latent energy lurking beneath, carries the grille's vertical outlines back to the roof's a-pillars. the side view shows a sharply creased shoulder line running the length of the car, from the trailing corner of the headlamp housings to the leading edge of the tail lamp lenses. Side window glass atop a relatively high beltline is nicely proportioned with the body mass. A bump strip breaks up the expanse of the lower door panels. The front and rear lower-quarter panels dip slightly fore and aft of the round wheel housings, pulling the body closer to the ground. good-sized tail lamps tie together the three elements of the new a4's rear fascia, positioned for the most part in the panels framing the trunk lid and license plate surround, but overlapping those two pieces to break up what might otherwise be an overwhelming expanse of metal. Single-tip dual exhausts exit beneath the monochromatic bumper at each end of an inset panel painted a contrasting color to the body's scheme. interiorthe audi a4 interior keeps the faith with its sporty heritage, with all controls focused on the driver and with few exceptions ergonomically configured and intuitively located. The steering wheel hub repeats the grille's trapezoidal outline. A proper handbrake lever resides in the center console with a pair of cup holders alongside. Colors and finishes are muted. A choice of wood trim is available that nicely complements the interior. seats are well bolstered, and well lumbared, perhaps too well for relaxed, long distance cruising. The standard cloth upholstery feels durable and provides a bit of grip.
