2005 chevrolet suburban review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's heavy-duty family hauler. introductionas familiar as the family dog, the chevrolet suburban cruises into 2005 with the same maximum-size virtues that have kept it a best-seller for so many years. Since the 'burb first appeared, it has never wavered from its mission. It remains the first choice for anyone who needs to haul six or more people plus their cargo. Its v8 engines deliver strong torque for towing heavy loads, and it's supremely stable when pulling heavy trailers through nasty, windy weather. Suburban provides a stable, comfortable ride for long-distance travel. Last but not least, it's fully capable of slogging down muddy two-tracks, whether in pursuit of the great outdoors or to get some work done. the 2005 model year brings some minor improvements. Fuel economy is improved. A revised tire-pressure monitor is now standard, alerting drivers when a tire needs air. New options include stand-alone traction control and 17-inch all-weather tires. The z71 off-road package is available for 2wd models. A touch-screen navigation radio is available. The onstar telematics system is upgraded with enhanced hands-free operation. Interior trim has been revised. Running boards are more aerodynamic. There's also a new 7-to-4-pin wiring adapter for the trailer package. completely redesigned for model year 2000, the suburban then received a substantial update for 2003, with more than 40 major changes designed to enhance safety and improve reliability. The stabilitrak electronic stability program became available for improved control on slippery surfaces. New airbag systems were designed to better protect children and adults of various sizes. Adjustable pedals became available for the comfort and safety for drivers of smaller stature. Brakes were refined, and an all-new electrical architecture promised improved reliability. Xm satellite radio became available, along with a new panasonic dvd system for back-seat monkeys. The numbers don't really relate to anything and the term 1500 is often dropped in conversations. Suburban 1500 models come equipped with a 5. 3-liter v8. The 2500 models are available with a choice of 6. 0-liter or 8. 1-liter v8s. No diesel is currently available. the ls is the standard trim in either load range, which includes three-zone manual air conditioning, a 40/20/40 split bench front seat with six-way power for the driver, 60/40 split folding middle bench seat, fog lamps, assist steps, powered and heated outside mirrors, 16-inch aluminum wheels, and a rear window defogger. A preferred equipment group 1,035) adds bucket seats with upgraded cloth upholstery, a floor console, and a bose nine-speaker audio system with rear controls and headphone jacks. Xm satellite radio 325) is optional. the more luxurious lt 5,710) brings automatic climate control, leather seat inserts, power folding mirrors with in-glass turn signals and electrochromic dimming on the driver's side, the bose stereo, xm satellite radio, onstar, 17-inch aluminum wheels, and many other features. Lt is also available for the 2500 5,320). the z71 off-road package 6,185) includes heavy-duty springs and gas-pressure shocks, appearance items outside and lt-grade comfort and convenience features inside. Z71 is now offered on 2wd and 4wd 1500s, but not on 2500s. entertainment options include a panasonic dvd player 1,485 on ls, $1,295 on lt) with wireless headphones, auxiliary audio/video jacks and remote game plug-in. The touch-screen navigation system is optional as is an electric tilt-and-slide sunroof. walkaroundthere's no mistaking the 'burb. The chevrolet suburban looks like an old friend. It hasn't been completely redesigned since 2000, and the 2005 model retains a family resemblance to suburbans far older than that. Most people probably won't even notice that the running boards, or assist steps, have been redesigned for better aerodynamics and, says chevrolet, better durability. but we will miss the side-by-side cargo doors that are no longer available at the rear. Gm says they didn't sell very well, but we found them useful when pulling trailers because they would usually clear the trailer tongue jack. They also made it easier to control a dog while opening them. Nonetheless, for 2005, all suburbans come with the one-piece rear hatch with separately opening glass that most families prefer. The hatch is lightweight and can be opened with one hand. It comes with a window wiper/washer, and the one-piece window affords the driver a good view rearward. a puddle lamp mounted below the lt's side mirrors shines down to light up the perimeter. It can be turned on using the keyless remote. That's a nice feature when approaching the suburban in a dark parking garage, as it illuminates underneath the vehicle. In most respects, it is identical to the more luxurious gmc yukon xl. interiorclimbing into a suburban is a challenge for some. Running boards make it easier for others. The suburban's step-in height is lower than it was with pre-2000 models, a benefit of the current model's fully boxed frame. once inside, the suburban is roomy and friendly. The lt's leather seats seem more supportive, but we think there's room for improvement here. Big and cushy, they are similar to the seats found in all of gm's full-size pickups and suvs. Dual-level airbags inflate with less force in less forceful collisions. Sensors in the front passenger seat and seat belts measure the size and weight of the front-seat passenger and disable the airbag for child-size passengers. the second row is quite comfortable and very roomy. Headphone jacks allow rear-seat passengers to listen to cds while those up front tune in the radio. The third-row seatback folds down without having to remove the headrests, then the whole thing flips forward to substantially increase cargo capacity. A short prop rod locks it into place. The one-piece seat can be removed and is mounted on wheels, but it weighs 75 pounds, so removing it is a lot easier with a second person to help. We've done it.) loading cargo is easy because there's plenty of space for it. The spare tire lives underneath the vehicle, freeing up rear cargo space. driving impressionride quality in the 2005 chevy suburban 1500 is smooth, greatly improved over the previous-generation (pre-2000) models. The standard premium smooth ride suspension features a hydraulically controlled rear self-leveling system to keep the suburban at a normal ride height even when carrying heavy loads. Whether towing a horse trailer or picking up the soccer team, autoride continually adjusts the suspension for optimum ride and handling. This technology also helps reduce dive when braking (so that the nose of the vehicle doesn't dip down unduly), and body roll (or lean) during cornering, both of which improve stability. handling is excellent for a big, heavy truck. The steering is responsive and doesn't isolate the driver from the road. The suburban grips the road surprisingly well for such a large vehicle. We never lost traction while pushing hard over wet mountain roads on a rainy day in colorado. Two of us, both with racing experience, took turns driving into wet turns as quickly as we dared and the suburban never lost grip. First look indicates new flagship may be best luxury sedan. introductionthe audi a8 has been completely redesigned and re-engineered for 2004. Fast, smooth, and sophisticated, the 2004 a8 l may be the new leader among the high-end luxury sedans. It feels smoother and more refined than the mercedes s-class and it's easier to operate and better looking than the bmw 7 series. audi's a8 l boasts a powerful 4. 2-liter v8 engine, revised to produce more power for 2004. It comes with a new six-speed tiptronic automatic that replaces the previous five-speed transmission. Together, they deliver instantaneous responses to the driver wishes. Quattro all-wheel drive and a new adaptable air suspension offer a seemingly ideal balance between handling and ride quality. It's all wrapped in a new aluminum space frame, a lightweight, highly rigid structure that bonds the car into one cohesive unit, giving drivers a supreme sense of control with gibraltar-like stability. The a8's redesigned cabin is elegant, comfortable, and easy to operate. It makes its occupants feel rich and sophisticated, but not bogged down with gadgetry that requires intense study of the owner's manual. this is audi's largest sedan and it's a big car. Its wheelbase has been stretched even longer than last year's a8 l, providing even more room and greater comfort for rear passengers. As the company's flagship, the a8 l is designed to be the ultimate sedan. It competes with the mercedes-benz s-class and bmw 7 series, both of which are superb though not perfect luxury sedans. Similar to that of the bmw 7 series and jaguar xj, the a8's parking brake is electromechanical, a switch in other words. the 2004 a8 l is powered by a 330-horsepower 4. 2-liter twin-cam, five-valve v8. A solar-cell sunroof produces enough electrical energy to supply the passenger compartment continuously with fresh air via the blower even with the ignition off. walkaroundthe a8 features a distinct wedge-shaped body with a short front overhang, a low hood-line and a high, powerful tail. The shoulder line rises to the rear, giving it a croched silhouette. Its well-proportioned lines radiate elegance and agility. Audi calls it an expressive design with coupe-like lines. The front features audi's double grille with flush-fitted headlamps. Projector-beam fog lights lie below the well-integrated front bumper. nearly 17 feet in length, the a8 l is longer than the mercedes s-class, bmw 745li and 760li. The wheelbase of the new a8 l stretches to 121. 1 inches. That's 3 inches longer than the wheelbase of the previous-generation a8 l, essentially identical to that of the mercedes s-class, nearly as long as the bmw 745li and 760li, and substantially longer than that of the cadillac deville. (the wheelbase is the distance between the front wheels and the rear wheels. A longer wheelbase tends to offer more passenger room and increased stability.) the audi is slightly wider than the mercedes and comparable to the bmw. The a8 l's rear doors are long, allowing for convenient passenger entry and exit. front and rear doors open extra wide. Optional 18- and 19- inch wheels and tires are available that visually fill the wheel wells and provide a surprisingly smooth ride in spite of their short sidewalls. The taillights fit flush with the clean rear design. Those added features include the sophisticated air suspension, the elaborate bose sound system. The new space-frame design uses fewer parts, fewer joints for increased rigidity. That increased rigidity eliminates flex, giving the a8 l the feeling of being carved from a single block of bar-stock aluminum. The body is also made of aluminum. interiorthe a8 l comes loaded with features and its interior is comfortable and luxurious. The interior is a clean, classic design. A choice of leather and wood trim combinations ensures a touch of individuality. Handsome valcona leather seat upholstery comes standard with attractive alcantara (suede-like) door inserts. Aluminum trim gives the cabin a sporty flair. the seats are supportive and comfortable and adjust 16 ways. Front and rear seats are heated as is the leather-covered steering wheel. The center console provides generous storage. The electroluminescent instrument panel adjusts brightness automatically according to ambient light. a seven-inch color screen displays audi's multi-media interface, or mmi. The system is designed to minimize distraction while consolidating most of the interior functions giving the driver lots of options without filling the dash with buttons. The hvac (heating and air conditioning) system is instead a separate system that uses traditional climate controls mounted high on the center stack. For its part, the mmi screen on the center dash matches the look of the controls. Audi officials say customers discover little touches months after buying the cars. A secondary heater in the a8 l designed to heat up the rear quickly. Ambient lighting in the interior allows control of mood in the cabin. Mood lighting is good. the cabin is insulated well and carrying on a conversation is easy. It works terrifically well, essentially a microphone that samples the sound and sends out sound waves to cancel out undesirable noise. The cabin seems very well insulated for sound. The 12-speaker stereo sounds fantastic, with crisp bass and clear highs. An equalizer matched to the car's equipment and trim specification takes into account changes to interior acoustics caused by the choice of upholstery. The six-disc cd changer is in the glove box. Audi has wired the a8 l to accept either xm or serius satellite radio. The onstar telematics system comes standard, providing operators around the clock who can give directions and provide myriad other types of information. Lots of controls are available to the rear passengers including power lumbar support, and there's a fold-down center armrest. Additional heating elements ensure rear passengers get warm air just as quickly as front passengers. the a8 l comes with 10 air bags, including front knee bags. In a crash, the a8 l's computers quickly determine which dual-threshold, dual-stage air bags to deploy, how quickly to deploy them, and how intensely they should be deployed. driving impressionthe first impression of the audi a8 l is its smoothness. There's nothing remotely resembling a squeak or rattle, and there is no vibration. the responsiveness of the engine and transmission make the a8 l a joy to drive. Haul people, tow boats. introductionford explorer is a traditional midsize suv with body-on-frame construction. Available with v6 or v8 power, the explorer competes against the chevy trailblazer, jeep grand cherokee, toyota 4runner, and nissan pathfinder. explorer was completely redesigned for the 2006 model year and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation. The latest explorer is quieter than previous models, and it rides better. It leans less in corners and the brakes are more responsive. The rear seats fold flatter, and the interior has been improved throughout. More important, it's a very nice vehicle that's pleasant to live with and it compares well with the competition. all explorers offer a smooth ride and decent handling for such big, heavy vehicles. The interiors are pleasant, with only oddly designed door panels to complain about. With five, six, or seven-passenger seating configurations, customers can outfit their explorers to fit their passenger and cargo carrying needs. with the v8 engine, the explorer is rated to tow up to a whopping 7,310 pounds; that's about as much as a jeep grand cherokee with a hemi. And explorer is rated to carry up to 1,531 pounds of payload. explorer has earned the best possible impact protection rating in the federal government's crash tests: five stars for the driver in a frontal impact, the front-seat passenger in a frontal impact, front-seat occupants in a side impact, and rear-seat occupants in a side impact, according to the national highway traffic safety administration's 2006 model year new car assessment program. Ford says the explorer is designed to meet all known federal frontal- and side-impact crash requirements through 2010. for 2008, ford adds new standard and optional features. Side curtain airbags are standard on 2008 models, voice activation is added to the optional navigation system, and top-line limited models get standard power adjustable pedals and a universal garage door opener. At the same time, its generous use of chrome, big-and-bold lamps, and square-cornered aero mirrors make this latest-generation explorer look more like a lexus suv than a ford, and we mean that in the most complimentary way. between the elaborate lamps front and back, however, explorer is a big, empty box with five large doors and a whole bunch of space inside. each explorer trim level presents its own visual personality. The graphics are accented with metal surrounds both shiny and matte. On the downside, we saw a fair amount of glare reflected off the dash top onto the windshield. the seats are supportive and comfortable. The colors and trims are elegant and tasteful, and the use of metallic trim is not overdone. second-row seats are available as a 60/40 split bench with recline adjustment, or as two captain's chairs with fold-down armrests and a center console. The bucket seats are more comfortable for adults, but the bench seats fold down better for cargo. the third row, when ordered, is always a 50/50 split, but is available with manual or power folding and unfolding. the cargo floor is completely flat when all the seats are folded, with almost no forward rise. The five-seater has slightly more room with the seats folded. the dvd-based navigation system is very easy to use, with excellent colors and graphics, and a big eight-inch display. For 2008, it can now be operated via voice commands. ford's sync communications and entertainment system, due late in the 2008 model year, can recognize bluetooth-enabled cell phones, access their phonebooks, and play calls and read text messages through the speakers. It also has a usb interface to connect with ipods and other mp3 players. Voice commands and/or steering wheel buttons can be used to control all functions. the rear-seat entertainment system's drop-down screen seems small a bit small. When in position for viewing, the video screen combines with the rear head restraints to block the driver's view to the rear. Outward visibility elsewhere is good, with less obstruction than expected from the thick c-pillars. we don't care for the door handles. Ford designed the interior door panels so the armrests and door pulls would supplement the impact protection hardware built into the door's innards. 2001 toyota sequoia review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Not quite ford excursion or hummer proportions, but still a near-monster truck. however, the sequoia is also very civilized, quiet, comfortable, and, in the limited version we drove, very luxurious. With standard eight-passenger seating in three rows of seats, the sequoia can haul a boatload of kids (with or without the big dogs in tow). the sequoia is bigger in nearly every interior and exterior measurement than the toyota land cruiser; however, the top-of-the-line sequoia limited is more than $10,000 less expensive. lineupthe sequoia is offered in sr5 and limited trim lines. the sr5 comes standard with power windows, mirrors and door locks, cruise control, automatic climate control, and an am/fm stereo with both cassette and cd players. That's no surprise considering they're both built in the same assembly plant in princeton, indiana. The overall look is clean, purposeful, and, above all big. For example, we appreciated the extra front seat visors; while the primary visor is deployed above the side window, an additional visor can be extended down from the headliner to block the sun streaming into the windshield. Plus, there's a terrifically large bin between the front seats, which is split into two levels. The top level has a notepad holder and a place for coins. Other items make family outings a snap: multiple cupholders and storage bins scattered throughout the cabin; large openings for the rear doors which make installing child safety seats a breeze; front and rear air conditioning controls; and flexible seating arrangements. The third-row seats are easy to tumble forward (or remove, as they only weigh 52 pounds each) to expand the cargo area. There's enough space back there to clean out toys 'r us during a clearance sale. however, all is not perfect.
